Melbourne E-Sports Open 2018

Melbourne E-Sports Open is Australasia’s biggest esports and gaming festival. This inaugural event was held at Melbourne Park and We Are Technical was brought onboard to design and deliver the extensive audio visual production for Margaret Court Arena setup in the round.

From Fortnite to Forza, CS-GO to Chess, young and old gamers alike battled it out for the hefty prizes on offer, not to mention the bragging rights! One of the biggest challenges of the event was making sure everything complied with the many rules and regulations around competition gaming and the global livestream. So careful planning was needed to make sure it all went off without a hitch.

We used 4k projection coupled with massive screens (which if put end to end would measure close to 40m wide!), to enable the audience to be fully immersed into the battles. The line of sight to the screens needed to be kept clear for every seat as we were in the round, so the concert sized audio system was designed to fly above the screens while still creating an amazing audio experience for the crowd. There were no cheap seats in this arena!

The lighting rig was immense with close to 200 fixtures across 13 universes, so when it came to show time, the precise programming was triggered live via automation from the games played. When there were explosions in the game, the screens would glow, the PA would roar, the lighting would flash and the crowd would erupt!
